The Public History Center (PHC) was established in the summer of 2014. Public History is an action or approach that allows historical knowledge to reach the public. The PHC's mission is to foster a broader understanding of the importance of history and to forge closer relationships between Christopher Newport University and the world-class museums, archives, and public history agencies located throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Named in honor of Dr. Theodore R. Reiff, a retired Hampton, Virginia, physician and founding president of the Genocide Education Project, the Center applies historical, political, social and international perspectives to its initiatives. The Reiff Center is dedicated to raising awareness of the horrors of genocide, human rights violations and conflict and studying ways to overcome these by examining the international and national application of human rights, conflict resolution and peace studies.
The Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University was established in 2007 to help solve a growing problem in Virginia: the lack of unbiased and nonpartisan information both about important public policy issues facing Virginia and about citizens' views on those issues. Without such information, Virginia’s elected leaders face difficult decisions with little guidance from the citizens they represent.
The Center for American Studies (CAS) is an interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to promoting enlightened leaders, responsible citizens and intellectually mature adults. CAS seeks to foster greater civic awareness by promoting classical liberal education in the area of American Studies, including America's philosophical roots, history, economic foundations and place in the wider global community. The center brings together scholars from the nation's elite institutions to emphasize intellectual engagement of, and scholarship on, the classical texts and foundational documents of the United States' constitutional republic.
The Center for Community Engagement fosters a campus culture of meaningful service and social innovation to benefit the community and CNU students and faculty.
Located in Newport News, Va., the Christopher Newport University Applied Research Center (CNU-ARC) is a state-of-the-art research laboratory supporting innovative research in the areas of advanced nanomaterials for alternative energy, green processing of metals, nondestructive evolution of metal surfaces, novel nanomaterials for environmental remediation and the emerging fields of nanotechnology in biomedical applications.
