Beyond the Classroom

Christopher Newport’s business programs integrate many experiential learning opportunities, and students can choose from a wide variety of clubs, community engagement initiatives and professional development experiences.

Academic Internships
A critical component of each student’s Luter experience, an internship is a for-credit, 120-hour faculty-supervised work experience with a business or organization where you put theory into practice. The Luter School and Center for Career Planning match students with employment opportunities – most of them paid.

Luter Business Institute
Student teams provide business consulting assistance to regional businesses.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program
Each year accounting students prepare federal and state tax returns for low-income taxpayers.

Study Abroad
We offer a host of engaging overseas opportunities for business majors, from trips led by Christopher Newport faculty, to full terms of study at AACSB-accredited partner universities in Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Service Learning
Later students are encouraged to engage in community service through course projects, student club outreach, and departmental and university initiatives.

Executive Mentorship Program
This 12-month one-on-one mentoring experience with a local business executive offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore possible career options within your major while gaining invaluable insights from a leader in the field.

Luter Signature Program
This co-curricular initiative enhances the academic experience with business and professional skills development. You can customize the program from an array of options and earn a certificate upon completion.

There are also a number of student clubs and organizations that will enhance your learning experience, such as the Entrepreneurship Club and the Captain’s Educational Enrichment Fund, a student-run investment fund where members learn to manage a portfolio that funds a scholarship at Christopher Newport.

The Luter School regularly brings executives and business representatives to campus to discuss their experiences and career opportunities. These are valuable opportunities for you to learn about business, build your professional network and prepare for success after graduation.
