Department of English

Our students write what the world reads—and shape how it thinks.

At Christopher Newport, English majors engage deeply with both the power of literature and the craft of writing. As readers, scholars, and writers, our students explore how stories shape cultures, identities, and ideas—past and present.

You’ll study the formal beauty and complexity of literature, while exploring big questions about genre, voice, interpretation, and cultural context. Courses in literary history, major authors, and critical theory will sharpen your analytical skills and deepen your understanding of how literature works—and why it matters.

At the same time, you’ll grow as a writer through a wide range of creative and professional experiences. Our curriculum includes fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, alongside practical training in journalism, public relations, grant writing, and multimedia composition. Whether you’re writing a short story, a feature article, or a strategic communication plan, you’ll learn to write with clarity, purpose, and impact.

This balanced approach—rigorous literary study combined with diverse writing practice—prepares you for success in a wide range of careers, from publishing, education, and law to marketing, tech, and nonprofit leadership.
