Scholarships

The English Department proudly offers the following scholarships to deserving students:

The Albert E. Millar Jr. Scholarship honors the life and career of Dr. Al Millar, who taught at Christopher Newport from 1965-2001. This scholarship is funded by donations from the Millar family, students, colleagues and friends. It is given to English majors who demonstrate a desire to study literature.

Estimated Award: $1,700 (award amounts fluctuate from year to year)

Requirements:

  • Rising Senior English major with an interest in Literary Studies
  • 3.0+ GPA
  • Submit a literary analysis writing sample that reflects your best work, which may be part or all of a paper from an English course.

Applications are usually collected in the winter and awarded at the end of the spring term. The award will be applied the following academic year.

The Teresa Van Dover Scholarship is given in memory of Terry Van Dover, an English major enrolled during the 1980s. After her death, her husband solicited contributions from Terry's former employers, as well as friends and family, in order to establish the award, the criteria for which reflect Terry's interests and circumstances.

Estimated Award: $2,000 (award fluctuates from year to year)

Requirements:

  • Junior or Senior English major
  • 3.0+ GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need and academic achievement, with priority given to the latter
    • IMPORTANT: financial need MUST be documented in CNU’s Financial Aid Office; if you are unsure if you meet this requirement, please contact finaid@cnu.edu to confirm your financial need status BEFORE applying.
  • Submit a cover letter that outlines your financial need and academic achievements.
  • Submit a writing class writing sample that reflects your best work.

The Nancy Gonzales Turner and Shelly Nicole Turner Memorial Endowed Scholarship in English is awarded to a student majoring in English who exhibits outstanding academic achievement.

Estimated Award: $6,000 (award amounts fluctuate from year to year)

Requirements:

  • Any declared English major, full-time or part-time, of any year
  • 3.0+ GPA at CNU
  • Submit a cover letter that outlines your academic achievements.
  • Submit a writing sample that reflects your best work.

Applications are usually collected in the winter and awarded at the end of the spring term. The award will be applied the following academic year.

The Dr. Joyce K. Sancetta Book Award honors Sancetta’s ten-year service to the English Department. Sancetta funded this book award to assist an English major in developing a library for their personal and/or professional use. Eligible students can submit a list of proposed books and an essay explaining how the specified books advance the student’s interests and goals.

Estimated Award: $2,000 (award amounts fluctuate from year to year)

Requirements:

  • Junior or Rising Senior English major 
  • Submit an essay of <500 words describing how the scholarship would allow you to purchase books which would allow pursuit of your literary and research interests.

Applications are usually collected in the winter and awarded at the end of the spring term. The award will be applied the following academic year.

The W.D. Wolf Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Wolf’s service to the English Department from 1976 to 1982.

Estimated Award: $1,000 (award amounts fluctuate from year to year)

Requirements:

  • Junior or Rising Senior English major or incoming or current MAT graduate student
  • The cover letter should address the academic achievements of the student.
  • The writing sample should reflect the best work of the student.

Applications are usually collected in the winter and awarded at the end of the spring term. The award will be applied the following academic year.

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to full-time students. The recipient of this award must be the editor-in-chief of The Captain's Log. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA. This scholarship is restricted and may only be applied toward tuition charges.
