Department of Fine Art and Art History

Beyond the Classroom

As an art major, you’ll have access to the incomparable facilities of the Ferguson Center for the Arts in which to explore your creative vision in the following studios and labs:

  • Ceramics studio
  • Digital arts lab
  • Painting/drawing studio
  • Photography studios
  • Printmaking studio
  • Sculpture studio

Each year several major exhibitions are held in our two main art galleries: the Falk Gallery and the Ferguson Hall Gallery. Exhibitions include work by Christopher Newport students and alumni, and other American and international artists. Photography students have numerous exhibition and learning opportunities, including our annual campus-wide juried photography show, which includes cash awards.

Travel and study abroad is integral to the understanding of the visual arts' cultural and historical significance. Our study abroad courses encourage you to see and create art around the world. Past trips have included Italy, England and the Czech Republic.

Students also find gainful employment in a host of rewarding internships at nearby galleries, museums and organizations, including graphic design, photography, research, video production, gallery preparation, and many more.

Students have the opportunity to join the honorary art fraternity, Kappa Pi, which sponsors and participates in many art-related activities and community projects.
