Department of History

The study of history helps us understand our place in time and to see ourselves as citizens of the world. It embodies the true spirit of the liberal arts, bridging the humanities, social sciences, and natural and behavioral sciences.

History engages students directly with the experiences of people in the past, and in so doing, also helps to illuminate our present experience. Historians are experts in:

  • Critically evaluating competing interpretations
  • Preparing and presenting persuasive arguments in oral and written forms
  • Applying the past to understand current events and trends
  • Reconstructing complex events

By developing strong ability in these areas, as well as in research, writing, collaboration, communication and critical thinking, history majors learn valuable skills that will serve you long after graduation.
