University Band

The Christopher Newport University Band is an ensemble comprised of wind players and percussionists from all academic disciplines around campus. The University Band studies and rehearses wind band repertoire that fosters musical growth and human connection through music. The ensemble performs an annual concert in the spring semester, and is under the direction of Dr. John Lopez.

Rehearsal Schedule
Mondays & Wednesdays of the Spring Semester, 4 - 5:50 p.m.

Auditions

Auditions are held at the first rehearsal of the spring semester. This audition is for part placement only and all who audition will have a place in the ensemble. Proficiency on all major scales is the only audition requirement.

Director

John Lopez serves as the Director of Athletic Bands at Christopher Newport University where is the director of The Marching Captains, Pep Band, and is the conductor of the University Concert Band and the CNU Trombone Choir. His academic achievements include the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from The University of Georgia, the Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from The Ohio University in Athens, OH and the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Glenville State College in Glenville, WV. His wind conducting teachers include Dr. John Lynch, Dr. Andrew Trachsel, Mr. Frank Wickes, and Mr. John Whitwell. Following his undergraduate study, Dr. Lopez served as the Director of Bands at Gilmer County High School in Glenville, WV and continued as a pedagogue during his graduate studies. His teaching has earned him awards including the 2010 Ohio University Outstanding Graduate Teaching Associate Award, the 2007 West Virginia Region 7 Teacher of the Year, and the Ronald P. Socciarelli Award for Outstanding Service to the Ohio University Marching 110. He was also awarded the Outstanding Sponsor Award by the Northeast District of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national band fraternity, in 2015 for his service as the advisor to the Mu Nu chapter of this organization. Lopez has also achieved as a trombone player and conductor. Notable performances include playing at the 2013 International Trombone Association Conference and conducting at the 2012 Eastern Trombone workshop hosted by the "Pershing's Own" United States Army Band. He is also an active scholar on wind band music with several publications in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. Additionally, Lopez holds professional memberships in Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
