Pre-Med and Pre-Health Programs

Pre-Med Scholars Program

The Pre-Med Scholars Program (PSP) invites select students interested in medicine (physicians and physician assistants), dentistry and veterinary medicine to participate in a special program that offers multiple opportunities, including:

  • Eligibility for early acceptance to joint programs at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)
  • Scholarships, including the Riverside Medical Group Scholars ($2,500 or $5,000/year) and the Rocovich Scholars
  • Focused, individualized advising and mentoring
  • Guaranteed clinical internships and service-learning opportunities

Joint Programs

Christopher Newport-Eastern Virginia Medical School
Christopher Newport-Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine

Qualified PSP students can apply for nonbinding, early admission to EVMS and VCOM. These students are guaranteed admission after they graduate from Christopher Newport, as long as they meet all the requirements of the program(s). Students admitted to VCOM are not required to take the MCAT.

Riverside Medical Group Scholars

Two $2,500 scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen interested in pursuing a medical degree. To qualify, admitted students must have a minimum SAT score of 1250 in critical reading and math sections (on the old SAT), or a 1310 (new SAT), or composite ACT score of 28, and high school GPA of at least 3.7.

As an Riverside Medical Group (RMG) Scholar, you’ll shadow Riverside physicians several times throughout the year and participate in a paid internship at Riverside Medical Center after your sophomore year.

As an upperclassman RMG Scholar, you’ll receive a $5,000 scholarship, provided you maintain a 3.7 GPA during your freshman year.

How to Apply
Qualified applicants who selected pre-med as their intended field of study on the Common Application will be invited to submit an additional essay about their interest in studying medicine.

Rocovich Scholars

The Rocovich Scholars Program is open to students from either:

  • A rural area of Virginia or the surrounding Appalachian region
  • An underrepresented population
  • Low-income family

Rocovich Scholars participate in the President’s Leadership Program (PLP) and PSP and receive scholarships up to $10,000. Qualified Rocovich Scholars can apply for provisional, nonbinding, early admission to Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, and if admitted are not required to take the MCAT.

Eligibility Requirements

  • One of three criteria listed above
  • Minimum score of 1100 on the old SAT (critical reading and math only), 1170 on the new SAT or a composite ACT score of 24.
  • Minimum high-school GPA of 3.5

How to Apply
When completing the Common Application, select pre-med as your pre-professional academic track and “Yes” for PLP interest in the Academics section. You will then be prompted to submit the supplemental essay and schedule a required interview.
