Study Abroad

For Parents

Study abroad is an amazing opportunity for students to learn more about themselves and about how others around the world work and live. It can also be a daunting experience, with paperwork, international travel and safety concerns. We’re here to help make the experience rewarding for your student, and comfortable for you.

Steps to Study Abroad:

  1. Attend the Study Abroad Fair. Each fall during Family Weekend, the Study Abroad Fair is held on Friday. We welcome students and families to learn more about study abroad opportunities.

  2. Apply for or renew a passport. Students should have a passport valid for 6 months after their intended return date to the United States. Many students need to apply for their passport or will need to renew their passports.

  3. Send your student to the office for advising. Students can make appointments or drop by our walk-in advising.

  4. Decide on a program. Make sure the academics, financial resources, and location align with the student's interests and goals for their experience abroad.

  5. Prepare for traveling abroad! Speak with your family doctor and mental health professional to ensure your student is fit for travel. For prescriptions, students will need to travel with their full prescription and should have a letter from their doctor describing the dosage, reason for use, and type of drug.

  6. Pre-Departure Preparation and Orientation for the program. Each program will have a pre-departure session or on-site orientation for your student to learn about the location and other unique features of the program.
