Quality Enhancement Plan

The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) represents the part of the reaffirmation process that reflects and affirms SACSCOC’s commitment to enhance the quality of higher education in the region and focus attention on student learning. The selection and development of Christopher Newport’s QEP will take place in two stages.

Stage one includes broad-based involvement of institutional constituencies toward identifying a clear, focused topic that contributes to institutional improvement and enhances student learning.

Stage two requires Christopher Newport to do the following:

  • Develop a well defined plan for the chosen topic
  • Identify clear goals
  • Illustrate institutional capacity to initiate, implement and complete the QEP
  • Develop evaluation strategies for determining the achievement of goals

Both stages will be led by committees of faculty and staff under the leadership of Dr. Michaela Meyer, Professor of Communication and QEP Director.

QEP Topic

Over the past year, Christopher Newport embarked on an inclusive process to select our next Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) topic, a critical component in our efforts for reaffirmation of accreditation. The QEP Topic Selection Committee, composed of faculty and staff, was appointed to conduct a broad-based approach to the selection of our next QEP topic. This team reviewed past assessment data; administered surveys to faculty, staff, and students; and held town hall and focus group meetings to solicit input from the campus community. In November 2015, the Topic Selection Committee presented its recommendation to the Reaffirmation Committee.

It is with great pleasure that I announce Christopher Newport’s next QEP will be Undergraduate Research Literacy. This is an excellent QEP topic and we will have the opportunity to enhance student learning and cement undergraduate research as one of our signature programs at Christopher Newport University.

During the topic selection process, diversity was also identified as an important topic. Although not selected as the QEP topic, we will pursue a thoughtful discussion and exploration of ways to enhance the diversity of our campus community. Finally, I want to thank the QEP Topic Selection Committee, led by Dr. Michaela Meyer, the many individuals across campus who shared their ideas, and the Reaffirmation Committee for providing input during the final stages of the topic selection process.
