Community Captains

  • It's not enough to want to go to college – you need to get ready. This is the perfect way and the perfect place to do it. And, it's free!

Community Captains is a free early admission program for 10th graders from select Newport News high schools.

This program is for you if:

  • You attend An Achievable Dream, Warwick or Heritage High Schools.
  • You have a 3.4 GPA or 1150 PSAT score AND
  • You will be a first-generation college student, OR you qualify for free or reduced lunch.

If selected, you’ll have three years of free, on-campus learning opportunities at Christopher Newport – and even take a free class for college credit. Each Community Captain will be paired with a current CNU student mentor for guidance and support through all aspects of preparing for college.

  • Free for participants
  • Early admission to CNU
  • CNU student mentor
  • Educational, cultural and social events at Christopher Newport
  • Informative workshops on financial aid, career planning and academic success
  • Free for-credit statistics course taught by a CNU professor

If eligible, you can apply second semester of your sophomore year. You'll also:

  • Attend an information assembly at your high school
  • Interview with a CNU admission officer
  • Receive an offer of provisional admission
  • Attend an on-campus admitted student program
  • Be offered full admission to CNU during your senior year, provided you maintain a 3.4 cumulative GPA and fulfill all requirements at your high school
