Lori Underwood has enjoyed a 14 year career as a teacher-scholar at Christopher Newport University. Dr. Underwood earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and History as well as her Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Memphis. She earned her Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She is a Professor of Philosophy specializing in Immanuel Kant’s theoretical and political philosophy as well as the philosophy of law. Her most recent scholarship is an application of Kantian Cosmopolitanism to issues of Global Terrorism and the democratization movements of the Arab Spring. Along with numerous conference presentations and journal articles, Dr. Underwood has published three monographs and a collection of essays. These include Kant’s Correspondence Theory of Truth: An Analysis and Critique of Anglo-American Alternatives (2003); Terror by Consent: The Modern State and the Breach of the Social Contract (2007); Cosmopolitanism and the Arab Spring: Foundations for the Decline of Terrorism (2012); The Root of All Evil?: Religious Perspectives on Terrorism (2013) Dr. Underwood also serves as series editor for Terrorism Studies, an interdisciplinary series with Peter Lang Publishing, examining the problem of terrorism from a humanities perspective. Currently serving as Dean of the College of Arts & Humanities and Director of the Canon Leadership Scholars at Christopher Newport University, Underwood has also served as chair of the Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies. She has served on the Faculty Senate as Vice President and Secretary, on the Task Force for Academic Life, as chair of the Budget Advisory Committee and the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee among others.
