History of the Center

The Center for Community Engagement officially launched in January of 2009 as the Center for Service Learning and Social Entrepreneurship.  Prior to its inception, a university-wide committee of faculty and staff conducted a year's worth of research to determine the best possible structure for such a center.   While Christopher Newport University has a rich tradition of service through many departments and organizations, there was never a central clearinghouse to provide resources, guidance, and a sustainable framework for service.

In just a short time, the benefit of having a Center has become clear: Student and Faculty participation has grown exponentially, as have the number of Community Partners served.  The quality of service also continues to improve, as best practices are applied to both curricular and extra-curricular service programs.

In August 2011, the Center's name was changed to the Center for Community Engagement to better reflect the wide array of programs and access points offered.
