Take your community service work to the next level. Make a meaningful impact in the community.

These are all possible through the Service Distinction program - your path to realizing the power of purposeful community engagement!

What is Service Distinction?
Moving beyond the “one-time volunteerism” model, the Service Distinction program provides a framework the helps to establish deep, beneficial and reciprocal relationships between the local community and Christopher Newport students. The Service Distinction program is available to all students with at least four semesters remaining at CNU. Students serve a minimum of 140 hours, perform the majority of their hours (at least 100) within one of CNU's ten Service Tracks, and are highly encouraged to partner with one local non-profit organization to both provide and gain the most benefit from the program.

This commitment to dedicated, consistent service allows students to:

  • participate in higher level, more satisfying work than one-time volunteering provides
  • gain valuable, real-world, marketable skills and experience
  • develop skills related to policy development, program planning, and advocacy, while establishing a deeper understanding of societal issues and root causes

Moreover, the non-profit organization and the community being served benefit from the resulting impact a dedicated, reliable, and consistent team member provides.
