Christopher Newport University students take great pride in their university and look forward to sharing with you the energy, excitement, enthusiasm and Captains spirit that will abound during Family Weekend October 5-7, 2018.

Join us for the numerous activities we have scheduled for the entire family. Tour campus, visit your son or daughter’s residence hall, attend a show or cheer on the Captains to victory. There are so many opportunities for you to take advantage of during the weekend and we hope you will join us for what is sure to be a weekend you will remember for many years to come.

Things to know before you register:

  • Online registration opens on August 13, 2018.
  • The price is $25 per family
  • If your student will be attending any of the Family Weekend events, they must be included as a guest on the registration form.
  • Family Weekend registration is non-refundable
  • If you did not register online, you may register on-site during registration on Friday or Saturday.

Parking

There is open parking on campus during Family Weekend with a few exceptions: Lot M is reserved for President’s Circle guests and families who purchased the Discovery Pass. Lots D, L, K and I will close at 10 p.m. on Friday, October 5, to begin set up for the Tailgate Zone. These lots will open for those with valid tailgate zone passes on Saturday, October 6, from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. After 6 p.m., these lots will be open parking.

2-6 p.m. Study Abroad Fair

Learn about study abroad programs offered through CNU and our partner organizations. Speak with faculty about options available in the summer, spring break and semester. Learn about the CNU Exchange partners and the opportunities to study in those locations for a semester. Meet representatives from study abroad organizations with additional options around the world for semester or summer programs.

3-7 p.m. Registration

Family Weekend includes a full schedule of games, concerts, fairs and fun! Families arriving after 7 p.m. on Friday can have their student pick up registration materials for them or pick them up on Saturday.

Library Rotunda
5 p.m. CNU Volleyball vs. St. Mary's College of Maryland

Cheer on the Captains as they take on St. Mary's. Admission is free.

Freeman Center
6:30–7:30 p.m. President's Circle / Discovery Pass Reception*

Join President Trible and other members of the CNU community as we kick off Family Weekend with a reception featuring heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks. This is an event for the whole family! Please remember to include your student when registering your family for this event.

*This event is by invitation only for Discovery Pass and President's Circle Members.

7 p.m. CNU Volleyball vs. Marymount

Cheer on the Captains as they take on Marymount. Admission is free.

Freeman Center
8 p.m. Ring Ceremony

The junior class ring ceremony is a tradition that will be as memorable as your official ring. You have the opportunity to join your class, family members, alumni and staff on the Great Lawn where President Trible will give you your ring in a walnut ring box bearing the Christopher Newport University seal in gold.

*This parents-only event is by invitation only for President's Circle members.

10:30-11:30 a.m. Conversation with the President

Start your Saturday off with a state of the university address by President Trible.

Diamonstein Concert Hall
11 a.m. CNU Volleyball vs. Randolph

Cheer on the Captains as they take on Randolph. Admission is free.

Freeman Center
11:30 a.m. Coffee and Conversation

Immediately following conversation with the president, join several faculty and staff members for coffee in the Concert Hall lobby. Bring your questions and find out what's happening in and outside the classroom at CNU.

Noon Legacy Lunch

We love our alumni, especially when they send their children and grandchildren to Christopher Newport! We want to take this opportunity to thank you and share a special lunch for those who share the Christopher Newport legacy with their family members. Bring the whole family for a lunch in the beautiful new Gregory P. Klich Alumni House.

1 p.m. Tailgate Zone Opens

Join fellow Captains fans in a pre-game tailgate in the lot next to POMOCO stadium. Tailgate passes go on sale August 27th and can be purchased through the ticket office by calling (757) 594-7880. For more information on purchasing tickets and tailgate regulations, visit the Athletics Department website.

1 p.m. CNU Volleyball vs. Messiah College

Cheer on the Captains as they take on Messiah College. Admission is free.

Freeman Center
3 p.m. Musical Showcase

An annual Christopher Newport tradition, featuring our outstanding students, faculty and ensembles.

Diamonstein Concert Hall
4-6 p.m. Family Dinner Picnic/Field Fest

Catch the CNU spirit as we celebrate the Captains with this party on the field. The festival will take place during the family picnic on the James River Hall field at 4 p.m. and is free and open to all families attending Family Weekend.

Enjoy food and fun for this year's Family Weekend dinner picnic. The picnic is $17 per person (children under 4 years old and CNU students on a meal plan are free).

6 p.m. CNU Football vs. Salisbury

Cheer on the Captains as they take on Salisbury.  General admission and reserved bleacher tickets go on sale August 27th and can be purchased online.  Chairback seat tickets go on sale October 1st and can be purchased through the ticket office by calling (757) 594-7880.  For more information on purchasing tickets, visit the Athletics Department website.

10 a.m.-2 p.m. Brunch

The Family Weekend tradition of Sunday brunch includes live music and the finest variety of breakfast and lunchtime favorites. This event sells out quickly, and space is very limited, so reserve your seats early! Reservations are on the half-hour.

Brunch is $28 for guests over the age of 10, $11 for children between 4-10 years old and free for children under the age of 4.

Discovery Pass

A Discovery Pass gives you access to a host of special Family Weekend features and programs, including:

  • An exclusive CNU spirit bag at check-in
  • VIP welcome cocktail reception with President and Mrs. Trible
  • Reserved parking for Friday night’s Family Weekend activities
  • Reserved game-day parking with in-and-out privileges (not a tailgating lot)

All President’s Circle members receive a Discovery Pass. Parents who make a generous tax-deductible contribution of $250 to the CNU Parents’ Fund also receive a Discovery Pass.
