Guidelines for IDEA Survey Selection

  • All probationary faculty should use the diagnostic (long) form for all classes and labs (but no more than four), including during the fall and spring of the year in which the tenure review occurs.
  • Restricted faculty with fewer than five years of services at CNU should use the diagnostic (long) form for all classes and labs (but no more than four).
  • Restricted faculty with five or more years of service at CNU should evaluate two courses, one using the diagnostic form and one using the short form.  Lecture courses are preferred if only two courses are being evaluated.
  • Tenured faculty should evaluate two courses (even if they only teach two), one using the diagnostic form and one using the short form.  Lecture courses are preferred if only two are being evaluated.
  • Adjuncts should use the diagnostic form for all classes.
  • For faculty on a terminal contract, the selection of IDEA forms is by request of the chair, dean, or provost. Individual faculty members may also request that their courses be surveyed if they desire feedback.
  • Chairs, deans or the provost may always request additional diagnostic or short forms over the minimum guidelines stated above.
  • Classes must have at least six participants to be evaluated with the IDEA student survey.

Note that while these guidelines make heavy use of the diagnostic form, The IDEA Center researchers have not noted student "survey fatigue".
