Healthy Foundations

A healthy lifestyle goes hand-in-hand with academic success. At Christopher Newport, you’ll be able to create a fitness program that works for you and supports your overall health and wellness.

College can be stressful at times, and a busy schedule means you may not always be able to eat right or get enough sleep. This seminar series focuses on healthy behaviors that can help you maintain your edge and do your best throughout the school year.

Topics include:

  • Stress and stress management

This seminar helps students understand stress, how it affects the mind and body, and what you can do to help alleviate stress in your life.

  • Fitness and exercise basics

This workshop will review exercise basics, including cardio, resistance and flexibility training, according to American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines.

  • Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the quality of being fully awake to the experience of the present moment, just as it is, with an open heart and mind. Practicing mindfulness can lead to profound results, and has been proven to increase emotional and psychological balance, decrease stress levels, and improve quality of life.

  • Nutrition

Poor nutrition contributes to stress, and is also associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. While nutritional needs vary from person to person, we learn the basic guidelines established by the American Heart Association and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
