Celebrate Christmas in Richmond

Monday, December 4, 2017

Come join your LLS friends as they celebrate the holiday season in Richmond! The first stop is the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to see a special exhibit called: Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China. First discovered in 1974 by farmers in China, an underground army of nearly 8,000 life-size terracotta figures is known as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century. Discovered one mile east of the known burial site of the First Emperor of China (r. 221–210 BC), or QinShihuang, the terracotta army was created to accompany the emperor to the afterlife. This exhibition features ten majestic terracotta figures, including a cavalry horse, among 130 works that tell the story of China’s birth and one man’s lasting imprint on a nation. The exhibition also features arms and armor, horse and chariot fittings, ritual bronze vessels, works in gold and silver, jade ornaments, precious jewelry, and ceramics. Excavated from the First Emperor’s mausoleum complex, the objects date from the Eastern Zhou dynasty (770–256 BC) through the Qin dynasty (221–206 BC) and represent the complex history, myths, and burial customs of ancient China. They also explore the First Emperor’s profound influence on Chinese history. There will be a 50 minute guided tour, followed by free time to explore on your own.

Next, travel to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Begin with a guided tour of the Conservatory which is proud to be the mid-Atlantic’s only classically styled Conservatory. Here you will find unique plantings and special holiday displays including a 100 foot holiday tree in the north wing. Next is a buffet dinner in the beautiful Robins Room at Lewis Ginter, featuring hand-crafted botanical ornaments and displays. After dinner, there is time on your own to visit their annual Gardenfest of Lights. The show features more than 500,000 lights arranged in botanical themes throughout the Gardens.

Please wear comfortable shoes for the Garden and dress warmly! Don’t forget to visit the wonderful Garden Shop for that special Christmas present as well as the Education and Library Complex which will have many holiday trees and a popular toy train display.
