Application Deadlines

5-Year Program with initial licensure (CNU Juniors only):

  • February 1 of Junior year

MAT with Initial Licensure and Initial Licensure programs:

  • October 15 for spring admission
  • January 15 for summer admission

You should:
  • Submit your completed application through CNU Live, including all items listed below, to Graduate Studies
    (
    gradques@cnu.edu ), by February 1 of your Junior year.
  • Have completed at least 65 undergraduate credits. See program requirements.
  • Hold a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Download a copy of your current CNU transcript through CNU LIVE. Save it as a PDF and send it as an attachment to Graduate Admission at: gradques@cnu.edu
  • Have SAT score of 1100 or higher (with a minimum of 530 in the verbal and quantitative sections)*  or  ACT composite score of 24 (with English plus Reading Score no less than 46 and Math Score no less than 22)* on file with CNU or submit PRAXIS I scores** ( 532 composite )
    * All test scores must be less than 5 years old

  • Log in to CNU Live to send 2 Recommendation Forms electronically, one from a professor in your major.
    Music Majors
    : One of your letters of recommendation must be from your program advisor.
  • Submit a Resume  -  One to two pages, indicating your education, achievements, and employment to date.  The resume must be typed and sent in PDF format in an email attachment to  gradques@cnu.edu
  • Electronically submit responses to the 2 essay questions on the application.
    You may want to prepare the responses on a WORD doc and copy them into the box on the application.
  • Note: The application fee is waived for 5-year program applicants.
  • Obtain a fingerprinting/background from Newport News Public Schools
    1. Come by the MAT office (McM 253) to arrange for a time for your background check.  The latest you can sign up for a time in Fall 2012 is Friday, Dec. 7. Other times will be arranged for January 2013.
    2. When you sign up, you will need to pick up and fill out four (4) forms:
            1 AUP form (computer use authorization form)
            2 Child Protective Services forms 
            1 release of information for fingerprinting form.
    ** You have to fill these out and bring them with you  when you go for your background check.
    3. Obtain a cashier's check or money order for $44, payable to Newport News Public Schools, and bring it with you on the day of your background check. No cash, credit cards, or personal checks will be accepted.

Supported by the Julius H. Hlavaty Fund and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Prospective Teacher NCTM Conference Attendance Awards The purpose of this grant is to provide financial assistance to future teachers of mathematics for attendance at NCTM conferences. For 2010–2011, the Mathematics Education Trust will fund up to $1,200 (+ Conference Registration) for travel and subsistence expenses for full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are committed to teaching mathematics in grades K–12 to attend an NCTM annual meeting or a regional meeting of NCTM. MET will fund a minimum of six undergraduate awards.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to college or university students preparing for teaching middle school mathematics. American Association of Physics Teachers American Association of Physics Teachers The AAPT Executive Board offers two scholarships for future high school physics teachers.
