Annual Writers Conference

36th annual conference designed to improve writing skills and bring together both published and aspiring authors.

Christopher Newport University’s Lifelong Learning Society will present the 36th Annual Writers Conference May 5–6, 2017. The two-day event will take place at the Freeman Center, and is designed to improve writing skills and bring together both published and aspiring authors. This year’s keynote speakers are Dr. Jonathan White, associate professor of American studies and award-winning author of seven books, and Bonnie Bader, former associate publisher/editor-in-chief at Grosset & Dunlap/Penguin Young Readers.

Conference workshops will include the following:

  • Conducting Historical Research
  • What a Character! The Ins and Outs of Creating Memorable Characters
  • What's So Hard About Screenwriting?
  • Memoir and Remembering – Pull the Memory Trigger!
  • It's Not All About You: Finding the Universal Subject of Your Memoir
  • Writing About Trauma
  • The Pros and Cons of Prose Poetry
  • Robots, Wizards and Zombies, Oh My!
  • Rewriting: A Guide for the Perplexed
  • Writing for Children in the 21st Century
  • The Art and Craft of the Narrative
  • Powerful Pitch
