Hampton University President to Deliver 2018 Commencement Address

Dr. William R. Harvey will address graduates and receive honorary degree.

Dr. William R. Harvey, President of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, will deliver the keynote address at commencement on May 12, 2018.

“This is a special year in the life of Dr. Harvey and Hampton University. We are proud to honor President Harvey’s 40 years of remarkable leadership as Hampton University celebrates 150 years of excellence," says CNU President Paul Trible. "Dr. Harvey’s life of leadership, service and his extraordinary vision and commitment to our Commonwealth and nation truly embody what it means to live a life of significance. We know that Dr. Harvey will instruct and inspire our graduates and we will award him an honorary degree in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions that have made a powerful and positive difference in the world."

Harvey was named president of Hampton University in 1978, making him one of the longest-serving presidents of a college or university in America. In 40 years, he has transformed Hampton University into a world-class leader in higher education. He has received appointments to national boards by six presidents of the United States and led important community and educational initiatives in Virginia.

A native of Brewton, Alabama, Harvey is a graduate of Talladega College. After graduating college, he served three years on active duty with the United States Army. He earned his doctorate from Harvard University in 1972. Prior to assuming his current position, he served as assistant for government affairs to the dean of the Graduate School of Harvard University, administrative assistant to the president at Fisk University and as administrative vice president at Tuskegee University.

Dr. Harvey and his wife Norma have three children and three grandchildren.
