Three Christopher Newport graduates who are accomplished scientists will return to campus to offer career advice to current students.

The scientists will participate in a Women-in-Science panel discussion during the weekly environmental jobs series entitled Wednesdays4Work, which is hosted by the Department of Organismal and Environmental Biology. The panel program is at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February. 13, in the Trible Library Theater. All Christopher Newport students are invited to attend.

“Students understandably are curious about the many career paths that can lead from a biology degree or any science degree,” says Dr. Rob Atkinson, biology professor and organizer of the Wednesdays4Work series. “This will be a superb opportunity for our students to meet prominent scientists and we’re especially proud that three are CNU graduates.”

The panelists include:

Nancy Barker, Mid-Atlantic regional manager at Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. Barker leads a nearly $40 million operation, responsible for the financial operations and performance of more than 200 people involved with transportation, land development and environmental services.

Jackie Roquemore (MS ‘10), biology laboratory specialist at Christopher Newport. She supports instructional, research and administrative activities in the Organismal and Environmental Biology and Molecular Biology and Chemistry Departments, including managing multiple sections of over 30 science labs annually and facilitating research for over 20 faculty/instructors.

Crystal Levenson (BS ‘12, MS ‘13), health physicist for the Corporate Radiological Health Branch at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Her responsibilities include protection of employees’ unwanted exposure to ionizing radiation.

Autumn Tilghman (BS ‘15, MS ‘17), environmental scientist at Dramby Environmental Consulting of Newport News. Her responsibilities include wetland delineations, stream assessments and threatened and endangered species surveys.

Wednesdays4Work is organized as a conversational and casual discussion between the students and environmental practitioners. Most of the events are held in Forbes 1002 but this panel program will be held in the library theater in anticipation of a larger than usual crowd.
