Board Approves Tuition Freeze for All Students

Read time:

The Executive Committee of the Board of Visitors approved a tuition freeze for 2019 freshmen and all returning students. The unanimous vote follows adoption by the General Assembly and approval by Gov. Ralph Northam of a state budget that includes more funding for higher education.

“We are very grateful for the leadership and strong support of the members of the General Assembly in providing additional funds and savings that make this action possible,” said President Paul Trible. The first year of the recently adopted Captains Commitment tuition guarantee program will now include a 0 percent increase in tuition from 2018 although there will be a small increase in the comprehensive fee.

The Board of Visitors adopted the Captains Commitment before the General Assembly took action on the state budget. The Captains Commitment is a unique pledge that provides families certainty about tuition and comprehensive fees throughout the four years that a student is on campus.

“Over four years, our incoming freshmen and their families will save more than $1,300,” President Trible said, ”and we will endeavor to curtail future increases for our students as support from the General Assembly and the Governor permits.”
