Christopher Newport is ranked among the top universities nationally for study abroad participation, according to new rankings published by the U.S. State Department.
In a ranking of master’s degree-granting institutions offering short programs, CNU was ranked third among public universities and sixth among all universities, public and private. CNU ranked tenth nationally in total study abroad participation.
The rankings are part of the Open Doors 2023 Report on International Educational Exchange, released Nov. 13 by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE).
They are based on participation during the 2021-2022 academic year and offer one of the first snapshots of the post-COVID study abroad data. According to the report, nationally only 5.9% of undergraduate students studied abroad in 2021-2022. At CNU, nearly 27% of students take advantage of what can be a life-changing opportunity. Last year, Captains studied in 37 countries across six continents.
Studying abroad offers more than just a chance to see a new part of the world. When they experience new cultures, make friends from around the world, and gain a global perspective, students develop hard and soft skills desired by employers. At the same time, they’re earning credits toward a degree.
Students in any major can make study abroad a part of their academic journey. Those who plan ahead can study for an academic year, a semester, or a summer and still graduate on time.
Study abroad options also include destinations around the world. Many students choose to participate in the signature CNU in Scotland program, spending their spring semester at the University of Glasgow, an internationally recognized institution with prestigious programs in the sciences and humanities.
Once in Scotland, participants take one course with their Christopher Newport faculty leader and the remainder of their classes at the University of Glasgow, where they participate in unique opportunities, including special cultural events and travel in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
