CNU Establishes Distinguished Professorship in European Integration Studies

(Newport News, VA) - Christopher Newport University Professor of Economics George K. Zestos, is the recipient of the educational award of the Jean Monnet Chair from the European Union for 2010-2013.  In addition to CNU, Indiana University, Rutgers and Skidmore College are the only U.S. universities selected to establish the Jean Monnet Chair Program this year. The prestigious award includes a monetary stipend of $60,000.

Jean Monnet (1888-1979) is considered the founding father of the European Union. At the end of World War II, Monnet led the movement for the unification of Europe.  He was the intellect of the formation of the European Coal and Steel Community (1952), which cemented permanent peace in the European continent. European integration based on Monnet’s plans and vision remains an ongoing process contributing to peace and prosperity throughout Europe.

In addition to research, the Jean Monnet Professor is required to offer two courses per year on European Integration. Dr. Zestos will offer a new course: “EU in the 21st Century: Past Successes and Present Challenges,” designed for honors students. The second course, “European Integration,” is offered in the liberal learning core curriculum, Western tradition. Dr. Zestos also plans to invite distinguished speakers to address issues on European integration.  These lectures will be open to the CNU community as well as residents of Hampton Roads.

Dr. Zestos’ area of academic specialization is in international economics with an emphasis on European integration. The award proposal by Dr. Zestos was titled “Teaching and Research on European Integration,” and is the area of study he has been committed to since he was a graduate student. He regularly teaches courses on the subject and recently took one of his classes to visit the EU Institutions in four EU-member countries. He frequently presents his papers in academic conferences and always involves students in research projects.  His dissertation focused on European integration, and he is the author of European Monetary Integration: The Euro (2006).  He is widely published in international journals and edited books.
