CNU Set for Big Weekend of Post-Season Action
(Newport News, Va.) - The Christopher Newport University Department of Athletics is set for a big week as four teams begin NCAA post-season play and the football team will host its final regular-season game against Methodist.
Field hockey kicks off the action on Wednesday evening when they play host to Lynchburg College at 5 p.m. on Captains Turf Field. CNU defeated Lynchburg last September when the Hornets made the trip to Newport News and the Captains earned a 1-0 victory.
CNU will play host to the Newport News Regional of the 2010 NCAA Division III volleyball tournament beginning Friday afternoon when six teams will join the Captains in the Freeman Center for the right to advance to the Division III Finals in St. Louis, Missouri. CNU will play Gallaudet University in a First Round Game Friday, November 12, 2010, at 6 p.m. Randolph-Macon College and Franklin & Marshall College will start the festivities at 1p.m. on Friday with Eastern University and Richard Stockton College playing at 3:30 p.m.
The men’s soccer team will play host to Colonial States Athletic Conference champion, Neumann University, on Friday night at Captains Field at 7:30 p.m. The Captains won their second consecutive USA South championship after avenging their only loss of the season to N.C. Wesleyan in the 3-1 victory. Richard Stockton College will take on Johns Hopkins University at 5 p.m. in another First Round game at Captains Field.
The CNU women’s soccer team won their second consecutive USA South championship and has earned a trip to Ewing, New Jersey, to play The College of New Jersey in a First Round NCAA tournament game on Saturday, November 13.
Lastly, the CNU football squad returns to the gridiron on Saturday afternoon at 1p.m. for their final home game against Methodist University. The Captains (5-4 overall, 5-1 USAS) stand atop the conference standings and can clinch their seventh NCAA tournament appearance in ten years with a victory over the Monarchs.
