Lecture - Official English/English Only: Using Language as a Wedge

(Newport News, Va.) - James CrawfordThe Dean William Parks 2010-2011 Colloquia Series will host a lecture on Tuesday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m. featuring guest speaker James Crawford, founder and president of the Institute for Language and Education Policy.  The lecture will take place in the David Student Union Ballroom and is free and open to the public. No reservation is required.

Crawford will discuss how recognizing English as Americans' national language seems innocent on its face, yet the implications for civil rights, free speech, education and community relations could be severe.  He will also address the campaign for "English Only" as a thinly veiled expression of intolerance.

James Crawford is founder and president of the Institute for Language and Education Policy, and author of Hold Your Tongue: Bilingualism and the Politics of "English Only," as well as At War with Diversity: U.S. Language Policy in an Age of Anxiety.
