Dean Parks Colloquia Series to Host Lecture

(Newport News, Va.) - The CNU Dean Parks Colloquia Series addressing Language: Power, Prestige and Prejudice will present Dr. Dana M. Cloud, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Texas, Austin, in a lecture titled: “By the Power Vested in the Rhetoric of Rights: Gay Equality vs. Queer Liberation in the Debate Over Marriage.” The lecture will take place on Wednesday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the David Student Union Ballroom.  The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Cloud will describe the language and rhetoric of the marriage debates and stress the importance of the language of inclusion over the rhetoric of individualism.  The right to marry is at the center of the contemporary Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) movement.  But community members who identify as queer have challenged this demand as heteronormative and ultimately conservative.  How far can the call for equal rights truly challenge the existing order?

Dr. Cloud is the author of Rhetorics of Therapy, with a second title in press about the movement for union domocracy. She is co-editor of Marxism and Communication Studies, has published in multiple distinguished journals and books, and is a longtime activist for social justice.
