LifeLong Learning Society Announces Spring Program

(Newport News, Va.) - The opening lecture of Christopher Newport University's LifeLong Learning Society (LLS) spring program features Dr. Lisa Spiller and Dr. Jeff Bergner, CNU professors and the authors of Branding the Candidate: Marketing Strategies to Win Your Vote. The lecture will take place in the Ferguson Center for the Arts Music & Theatre Hall on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. A new member orientation will be held at 12:15 p.m., and an all-member reception is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. in the lobby.

LLS members have numerous new courses to choose from this spring, such as Buddhism’s Ideology and Practices; The Galapagos Islands; An Introduction to African Dance of the Diaspora; Titanic Tragedy: The 100th Anniversary; Dangerous Mixture: Politics, Economics and the USA’s 2008-11 Recession; Monet and Friends: The People, Places and Art of Impressionism; Islamic Philosophy; World War I; and Ancient Explorers of America. Other popular classes such as Watercolor Painting; Understanding Opera II; Tai Chi; Practicing Poetry; Body Fusion: Tone & Stretch; several computer and Internet courses; and the study of the Arabic, Chinese, and Spanish languages will also be offered. All LLS courses are designed to keep seniors active and on top of current trends. The spring program runs from Jan. 30 - Apr. 13.

In addition to classes and lectures, LLS plans group excursions, including trips to historic Fredericksburg, Va., the Surry power plant (with lunch at the Smithfield Inn), Charleston, S.C. (featuring tours of Fort Bragg and its military airborne and special operations museum), and an escorted tour to some of America's majestic national parks. LLS will hold its annual “Art Extravaganza” luncheon on Tuesday, January 24, at 11:30 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Music & Theatre Hall lobby. Reservations are required by Jan. 17.
