Dr. Lisa Spiller Awarded Rank of Distinguished Professor

(Newport News, Va.) - Spiller Dr. Lisa Spiller has been awarded the title and rank of distinguished professor. She has served Christopher Newport University as a professor of marketing for more than two decades and is known for her unique ability to combine academic scholarship with innovative teaching. She becomes one of only two faculty members currently at the University to hold this highest academic rank.

This recognition of Dr. Spiller reflects well on her extraordinary accomplishments. In a recent statement, the faculty of the Luter School of Business noted, “we believe Dr. Spiller’s record of accomplishments unequivocally qualifies her for the honor and title of distinguished professor. Superior teaching, high quality scholarly output at the national and international levels, and meaningful service projects are all hallmarks of her impressive career.”

Spiller has taught marketing courses to undergraduate business students for more than 25 years and helped CNU pioneer a major in direct and interactive marketing. She has led numerous student teams to win and place in national and regional collegiate competitions, including the coveted Collegiate Gold ECHO Award from the Direct Marketing Association and the Collegiate Marketing Award for Excellence & Innovation (MAXI) from the DMAW Educational Foundation. She has received numerous awards for her teaching, including the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF, now Marketing Edge) Robert B. Clark Outstanding Direct Marketing Educator in 2005; the inaugural CNU Alumni Society Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring in 2007; the inaugural Direct Marketing Association of Washington (DMAW) Educational Foundation's O’Hara Leadership Award for Direct and Interactive Marketing Education in 2008; several Faculty Advisor Leader Awards from the DMEF; a Distinguished Teaching Award in 1997 from the DMEF; and the Elmer P. Pierson Outstanding Teacher Award in 1987 from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She is coauthor of the widely acclaimed textbook, Contemporary Direct and Interactive Marketing, now in its third edition. This textbook has been used by colleges and universities in 34 states across the nation and in six countries. Dr. Spiller is also coauthor of Branding The Candidate: Marketing Strategies to Win Your Vote, and her research has been published in many academic journals and textbooks. Spiller received her BSBA and MBA degrees from Gannon University and her PhD from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
