The Legendary Patti LuPone to Coach at 2014 Torggler Summer Vocal Institute
(Newport News, Va.) - Christopher Newport University has announced that Tony Award-winning singer/actress Patti LuPone will coach students during the 2014 Torggler Summer Vocal Institute (TSVI), a prestigious two-week residency program for emerging young singers who wish to train with world-renowned vocal pedagogues and performers. The institute will be held July 6-20 at CNU’s Ferguson Center for the Arts. A maximum of 50 students will be chosen to participate.
LuPone is a Tony Award winner for her performances in “Evita” and “Gypsy,” and an Olivier winner for her work in “Les Miserables” and “The Cradle Will Rock.” Her most recent Broadway appearances include David Mamet’s “The Anarchist” and the new musical “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” for which she was nominated for Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. She returned to Carnegie Hall in November 2013 to perform her fourth solo concert, was featured this fall as Joan Ramsey in the FX series “American Horror Story: Coven,” and will be seen in the upcoming season of the HBO series “Girls.” She is the author ofThe New York Times best-seller Patti LuPone: A Memoir.
Additional visiting pedagogues for TSVI 2014 include internationally acclaimed baritone Nathan Gunn; Costanza Cuccaro, lyric-coloratura soprano and chancellor's professor of music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; jazz vocalist, songwriter and playwright Spider Saloff; Timothy Noble, distinguished professor of voice at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; and Brent Wagner, chair of the Musical Theatre Department at the University of Michigan. Additional artists may be announced in the coming months.
TSVI exposes students to critical theories while developing a wide variety of essential performance skills during a two-week intensive artistic experience. All voice lessons, coaching and master classes are taught by leading performers, teachers and scholars. Skill-classes and workshops — including private lessons, vocal health, sight-singing skills, ensemble singing, diction, dance, acting, and movement and stage combat will be offered. Qualified rising high school juniors and seniors and college students are encouraged to apply by the March 1, 2014, deadline. For details, visit tsvinstitute.org.
TSVI is made possible by a generous gift from George and Mary Torggler, retired entrepreneurs and longtime supporters of the arts and education. For additional information regarding the institute, contact Torggler Executive Managing Director Dr. Rachel Holland.
