Christopher Newport Launches $42 Million Comprehensive Campaign

(Newport News, Va.) - Christopher Newport University has officially launched the most ambitious fundraising campaign in its history, setting a goal of $42 million to be reached by June 30, 2017.

The CNU Board of Visitors unanimously approved the start of the public phase of “Defining Significance: The First Comprehensive Campaign for Christopher Newport University” during Friday’s meeting.

The University also announced it has already raised $32 million during the campaign's silent phase. That total includes two of the largest gifts ever given to Christopher Newport – $5 million from Smithfield Foods, and a $12 million, 30-year commitment from Ferguson Enterprises, of which nearly $7 million will count toward the campaign goal.

“Defining Significance” is chaired by John Lawson, President and CEO of W.M. Jordan Company, whose family today pledged $1 million toward the campaign. “CNU is not my alma mater, but in so many ways it is my school,” Lawson says. “This university has become a game changer for Newport News and our region, and its influence now stretches across the globe. Christopher Newport educates and celebrates those who believe it is their privilege and honor to leave the world in better shape than they found it. That is significance. That is community. It is worth our investment, and that is why I’m here.”

The “Defining Significance” campaign identifies five key priorities, the most important of which is funding Scholarships to reward merit and address financial need for exceptional students. Additional priorities include Faculty Excellence and Great Teaching, to recruit and retain world-class teacher-scholars who embrace the academic vision of the University; Programs of Distinction, to support and enhance academic programs, as well as provide additional funding for the performing arts and athletics; the construction of an Alumni House, to honor Christopher Newport's graduates as well as preserve and celebrate the University’s history; and Annual Giving and Unrestricted Support, to create financial flexibility to address the University’s greatest needs, both now and in the future.

University President Paul Trible notes, “Few schools in America, if any, have come so far so quickly as CNU, but we still have important work to accomplish. We must continue to raise the bar by recruiting the finest faculty, seeking the best students and creating an exceptional college experience emphasizing leadership, honor and civic engagement. We want our students to live lives of significance, lives of meaning, consequence and purpose, and that’s what ‘Defining Significance’–  our first comprehensive campaign – is about, ensuring that we have the resources to empower the lives of our students and faculty now, and for years to come.”
