CNU's 6th Annual Day One of Service

(Newport News, Va.) - DOS 2013More than 450 Christopher Newport University freshmen, faculty and staff partnered with 58 local agencies to volunteer their time on Thursday, August 22, 2013, for CNU’s 6th Annual Day One of Service. This year’s effort focused on supporting the important work being done in the Newport News community, at its public schools, nonprofit organizations and at other local agencies. Organized by CNU’s Center for Community Engagement, the Day One of Service represents the first step in a four-year commitment by CNU students to volunteer throughout their college years.

Incoming CNU students from the President’s Leadership Program worked side by side with faculty and staff to complete tasks specifically requested by local organizations and schools. Brad Brewer, Assistant Director of the Center, notes “We call this the ‘Day One of Service’ because we encourage our students to do some exploring their freshman year but then to make long-term service commitments to an organization, school or specific population. This ‘day one’ introduces students to the many opportunities they have to become involved in meaningful community-building efforts throughout their years at CNU, and beyond."  This year, 20 of the Day One of Service sites were schools in the Newport News Public School District, where CNU students helped principals and teachers as they set up their classrooms for the upcoming academic year.

The 2013 Day One of Service was co-sponsored through the generous support of Ferguson Enterprises, Virginia Educators Credit Union and Printing Wright. For more information about the CNU Center for Community Engagement, please visit engage.cnu.edu, or contact Brad Brewer at brad.brewer@cnu.edu.
