Dr. Michaela D.E. Meyer Wins National Communication Association Award
(Newport News, Va.) - Dr. Michaela D.E. Meyer, an associate professor in CNU’s Department of Communication, was selected as the Randy Majors Award winner for 2013. This honor, bestowed by the National Communication Association's LGBTQ Caucus, recognizes an individual who has "made outstanding contributions to lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender scholarship in communication studies."
In the 18-year history of the award, Meyer is only the third woman to win, and the only individual to receive both the Majors Award (for scholarship) and the Lambda Award (honoring teaching, service and activism, won in 2011). Meyer will receive the Majors Award at the National Communication Association annual convention on Thursday, November 22, 2013, in Washington, D.C.
Meyer has taught at Christopher Newport University since 2004. She holds a PhD in communication and a master’s degree in journalism from Ohio University, and a bachelor’s degree in international studies from Miami University. Her research interests include identity, rhetoric of relationships, emerging adulthood, sexuality and gender.
The National Communication Association advances communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific and aesthetic inquiry. For more information, visit natcom.org.
