Biography

Dr. John C. Finn holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Arizona State University and is an Associate Professor of Geography and Chair of the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University. His research brings together literatures on racial capitalism, critical landscape studies, and environmental justice to better document and theorize ongoing economic, environmental, and health impacts of persistent racial segregation in the United States and to explore—and advocate for—more racially and environmentally just futures. For the last four years he has directed a mixed-methods project entitled “Living Apart: Geography of Segregation in the 21st Century,” which uses oral history interviews, experimental photographic methodologies, historical and archival research, and interactive mapping to trace the history of how overtly discriminatory federal housing policy created structures of racialized inequality in housing that continues to produce and perpetuate profoundly unequal urban and environmental outcomes. Finn has published close to 40 articles, book chapters, reports, and op-eds, has attracted over $170,000 in research grant funding, and has given over 60 invited lectures across North America, Latin America, and Europe. In 2019 Finn became the Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning peer-reviewed Journal of Latin American Geography. At Christopher Newport University, Finn teaches courses human geography, urban geography, human-environment interaction, field research methods, and Latin American studies. In 2020 Dr. Finn was awarded CNU’s Faculty Excellence Award for Scholarship, and in 2021 he was honored with the CNU Alumni Society Award for Teaching and Mentoring, the university’s top award, given to a single faculty member each year.
