Biography

Dr. Kerby A. Miller is Scholar in Residence in History at Christopher Newport University. After earning his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Miller spent most of his career as an endowed professor of history at the University of Missouri before retiring in 2015 and moving to Hampton Roads in 2023. He specializes in the history of Ireland and the Irish diaspora (immigration), and has received many national and international scholarly prizes and awards, including as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History, a Fulbright fellowship, and the Curti Award of the Organization of American Historians, the top social history prize from the premier professional association for American historians. In particular, his book Emigrants and Exiles: Ireland and the Irish Exodus to North America (Oxford University Press) is a landmark text in the field and a standard text in colleges and university classrooms and graduate seminars. Given his reputation among historians, he also has held appointments at New York University, Queen’s University of Belfast, and the University of Galway, which houses the Kerby Miller Collection of source material he has collected over decades. After obtaining emeritus status, Dr. Miller joined the Department of History at Christopher Newport, where he continues to give public lectures, meet with students, and work on his next book manuscript.
