Biography

Kimberly Lansinger Ankney is Associate Professor and Director of Music Education at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. Dr. Ankney is co-author of Music Discovery: Improvisation Activities for the Large Ensemble and Music Classroom, with Oxford University Press. Her research focuses on teachers’ perceptions of student thinking in improvisation, responsive pedagogy, preservice teacher development, and string education. Kimberly has contributed research to Advances in Music Education Research, Visions of Research in Music Education, Music Education Research, and has written book chapters for several major publishers. She has presented papers for the International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education (ISAME), the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME), the Society of Music Teacher Educators (SMTE), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and New Directions in Music Education. Prior to teaching at Christopher Newport University, Kimberly taught classes at Northwestern University and Lake Forest College. As a music teacher, she taught in Montgomery County Public Schools, Maryland and at Lancaster Country Day School, Pennsylvania in the areas of instrumental, choral, and general music education.
