Dance in Musical Theatre - there are very few resources for this and I would like to explore this topic more. I am working on an online resource for Broadway Tap. I also plan to continue my training in Elemental Body Alignment for which I am certified (EBA).
Biography
Born in Minnesota but raised in Texas, I am a product of a very artistic family. My father was a professor of Spanish and French, but was very involved in the theater. As a matter of fact, my mom and dad met doing high school theater. So I truly believe theater is in my blood. Mom put me in dance classes at a very young age and I participated in community theater throughout high school. I went to Angelo State University in San Angelo, TX to major in languages, but fell in love with my theatre class. I graduated with a BA in Theatre with a minor in English. I worked with a professional theatre company (Granbury Opera House) for a year before realizing I wanted to continue my education. I attended Western Illinois University where I received an MFA in Acting with a concentration in Musical Theatre and was also a member of the University Dance Company. After graduating, I worked in several professional theatre companies throughout the United States. I then went home to Texas and taught dance and musical theatre at a private theatre arts school. An opportunity arose to come to Virginia and stage manage and perform as a singer and dancer at Busch Gardens. I set roots in Newport News and began teaching high school theatre and dance. I taught in the Newport News Public School system for 9 years and during that time began adjuncting as a dance instructor at Christopher Newport University. I am now a full time lecturer with the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance and am very happy to be a part of the CNU family.
