Dr. Peter Carlson teaches Political Science, Public Administration/Public Policy, and Justice Studies courses at Christopher Newport University.


Dr. Carlson's research is in the applied areas of public policy and the criminal justice field. He has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and his edited/authored text PRISON AND JAIL ADMINISTRATION: PRACTICE AND THEORY is a best-selling academic volume in its 3rd edition.


Following a thirty-year career with the U.S. Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Prisons as a federal prison warden and as the Assistant Director of the agency, Dr. Carlson accepted an appointment in 1999 as a faculty member at Christopher Newport University in the Department of Government. Peter Carlson holds a doctorate in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, a Master's Degree from Western Oregon University, and a BA from Willamette University in Oregon, Prior to his appointment at CNU, Dr. Carlson has taught as an adjunct professor at Arizona State University, Florida International University, and St. Mary's College of California.
