Biography

Dr. Bob Colvin serves as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, which includes the Honors Program, Center for Community Engagement, Study Abroad and International Programs, and the Center for Effective Teaching. He has been at Christopher Newport for the past 19 years.

He previously served for seven years as Dean of CNU’s College of Social Sciences, encompassing American Studies, Anthropology, Communication, Economics; Environmental Studies, Geography, Political Science, Leadership Studies, Military Science, Social Work, Sociology, and U.S. National Security Studies. The college also includes the Reiff Center for the Study of Conflict Resolution, the Center for American Studies, the Wason Center for Public Policy, and the Academic Centers Office. He simultaneously served for five years as Dean of the AACSB-accredited Luter School of Business from May 2010 until July 2015.

Dr. Colvin served five years as the founding chair of the Department of Leadership and American Studies. He and a colleague authored much of the original curriculum and courses in leadership studies at CNU. His publications and college teaching have focused on leadership and government. He has taught in CNU’s program at Oxford University. He was voted as Professor of the Year at CNU in 2005.

Dr. Colvin served in the Virginia governor’s office at the Cabinet level, was executive director of the Virginia legislature’s State Crime Commission, was commissioner of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, and headed Virginia’s Office of Consumer Affairs. Early in his career he was a police officer for ten years. He is a FAA licensed pilot.
