Over time, state and other government funding of Christopher Newport's programs and initiatives is subject to volatility.  For this reason, the Public History Center seeks external resources to facilitate activity consistent with our mission.

For example, during 2013-2014, Dr. Thomas Hall (Associate Director of the PHC) was commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts to analyze data related to a survey that has been carried out sporadically since 1982. The work will help identify methods to define and measure arts participation, examine its relationship to household income, and consider whether funding cuts in the 1996-1997 era contributed to the secular decline in arts participation, observed consistently in the US across all generations.
