Immunization Requirement

Based on national guidelines and Virginia Law.

A Certificate of Immunization form, detailing immunization requirements and including a Tuberculosis Screening Form, must be completed and signed/stamped by a licensed healthcare professional.

What is "Complete Documentation?"

For the protection of our students and the university community, CNU's immunization policy, following national guidelines and Virginia law, requires that all entering first-time, full-time students submit a completed Certificate of Immunization to the Office of the Registrar. The intent of this policy is to provide a healthy environment for our students in which they can live and learn. If there are errors or incomplete records on students' paperwork, the Office of the Registrar will contact those students via mail, phone and/or email.

To comply with state policy, students must provide a completed Certificate of Immunization form, have it signed by a licensed health professional and submit it to the Office of the Registrar as soon as possible. Please be reminded that incomplete forms do not satisfy the state’s requirement.

I have not turned in my immunization record:

In compliance with the Code of Virginia § 23-7.5, first-time, full-time students must provide a completed Certificate of Immunization form signed by a licensed health professional to the Office of the Registrar by the appropriate deadline listed below:

  • August 1: Students who intend to enroll in the fall term
  • December 1: Students who intend to enroll in the spring term
  • April 1: Students who intend to enroll in May term, summer term 1 or summer term 2

Students who have not submitted their completed paperwork by these deadlines will not be eligible for enrollment until the paperwork has been submitted.

I have not received one or all of my vaccinations:

All CNU students must obtain their required immunizations, as stated by Virginia state law and university policy, and all students are required to turn in their completed signed documentation form to the Office of the Registrar no later than the deadlines listed above. Students missing one or all of their vaccinations are highly encouraged to turn in what has been obtained, as it becomes available, and their record will be held as 'pending' until all of the required information has been submitted.

How do I submit my documentation?

  • Bring it to the Office of the Registrar in Christopher Newport Hall during business hours.

  • Mail it to:
    Christopher Newport University
    Attn: Registrar/Immunization
    1 Avenue of the Arts
    Newport News, Virginia 23606

  • Fax it to (757) 594-771

  • Scan it and email it to register@cnu.edu

I have a religious or medical exemption:

  • Submit a Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption
  • Sign the medical provision at the bottom of the Certificate of Immunization form
  • If you currently have a religious or medical exemption, you have an option of receiving a blood test ("titer") which measures mumps antibody levels, and can determine whether you are immune to mumps.
