CNU’s national award winning Small Business Institute® (SBI) offers free business assistance to small firms located in the Hampton Roads area.  Teams of senior-level business majors and business minors, under faculty supervision of the SBI Director, provide semester-long business consultation to selected small business and non-profit organizations.

The primary mission of the SBI is to enhance the success of small businesses by providing the business owners with workable, practical, and feasible short-term solutions to complex business problems. Common types of assistance offered include:

William (Willy) Donaldson is a Lecturer in Strategic Management at the Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business at Christopher Newport University. He teaches the Senior Capstone Strategic Management Course as well as BUSN 440 SBI. He has developed and delivered management courses for the William & Mary Executive MBA program, the American Management Association, Aileron and numerous corporate universities. He is the author of The New Employer-Employee Contract: A CEO’s Perspective on Employer and Employee Success Published in: Keys to Employee Success in Coming Decades – Quorum Books 1999.
 
Willy has over 25 years of experience as a Board member and President and has been CEO of 8 companies. He has directly run 4 start-ups, put his own money at risk in 4 more and been involved in starting over 12 other companies. He has raised in excess of $90 million dollars for these entities in the public and private equity and debt markets.
 
Willy is the Founder and President of Strategic Venture Planning, a management consulting firm that assists boards, investors and senior management teams maximize results. As a consultant and trainer he has worked with over 40 companies on strategy formulation, on converting strategy to execution and on management development. His experience runs from start-up to International 50 companies, private and public companies, from services to manufacturing, from low to high tech and from for profit to not for profit.
 
Mr. Donaldson holds a BSIE in Manufacturing and Management from NC State (1979) and an MBA from William & Mary (1995).
 
Areas of research interest: Strategic Management Systems and Systems Theory; Corporate Universities and their impact on performance; Family business issues, dynamics and management systems, and Corporate Governance and Board Performance. He is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and a member of the Family Firm Institute.

Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary membership association that "Connects Business with Opportunity" through Facilitation, Advocacy, Communication and Education. This is the "FACE" of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber is the champion of the free enterprise economic system and the advocate of the business point of view. Peninsula Technology Incubator

The Peninsula Technology Incubator is dedicated to nourishing ideas into small business that are prepared to change the world. We provide our startups with the resources they need to position themselves as they implement their business plan and work towards raising capital. Our program focuses on providing a space to collaborate and access to area business leaders that help mentor young companies. The Incubator also builds relationships with local business which can offer their products and services at a reduced rate. The Peninsula Technology Incubator is funded by the City of Hampton, VA.
