Many of society’s greatest challenges are economic in nature. Economists examine how we allocate scarce resources, such as workers, equipment and raw materials, and develop theoretical and statistical models to analyze and make forecasts about the economy.
At Christopher Newport the study of economics combines analytical rigor, empirical skills and social relevance, with a special emphasis on public policy analysis – the ways we can influence leaders and effect positive change in the world.
Our professors have a wealth of real-world experience in business and government and are committed to mentoring and helping you reach your potential. Students and faculty enjoy a collegial relationship, and many of these relationships have provided students with special insights as well as a clear pathway to success.
As a current PhD student in economics, I frequently reflect on the outstanding training I received during my undergraduate studies, which prepared me well for rigorous graduate coursework. Choosing to continue my studies abroad in Europe, I have found that the skills gained through Christopher Newport University’s economics program are not only relevant, but also world-class.

Economics
When I transferred to Christopher Newport, the Economics Department made my transition smooth and helped me complete my degree on time. I love that the department feels like a family and the professors genuinely care for their students! The quality of education is also exceptional, and I feel well-equipped as I prepare to enter directly into a PhD program in economics.”
