Beyond the Classroom

At Christopher Newport, the English major extends far beyond the seminar room. You'll find a vibrant community where ideas come alive through research, writing, mentorship, internships, and real-world engagement.

Many of our students apply their skills by serving as writing consultants in the Center for Student Success or by working as writing associates, partnering with faculty to support peers across the curriculum. Others gain valuable professional experience through internships in technical writing, grant writing, editing, publishing, and communications, connecting with local businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies.

Want to see your name in print? CNU features two dynamic student publications:

  • The Captain's Log: Our weekly student newspaper, where you can write, edit, photograph, design, and lead.
  • Currents: An annual literary magazine that showcases student poetry, fiction, nonfiction and visual art.

We also offer rich opportunities for intellectual and creative growth through special programs and events:

  • The Scott Pollard Lecture Series brings nationally recognized scholars, artists, and public intellectuals to campus. Honoring the legacy of longtime faculty member Dr. Scott Pollard, this series explores topics like world literature, disability studies, children's literature, food in literature, and experimental music.
  • Take a Professor Out to Coffee invites English majors and minors to connect informally with faculty—on us! Whether you're seeking career advice, workshop feedback on a piece of writing, or just a conversation with your favorite professor, Einstein's Café is the place.
  • The Jean Everitt Journalism Lecture Series hosts prominent journalists and educators for public talks and symposia focused on the future of news, ethics, and media literacy.
  • The English Major with Distinction program supports high-achieving students in developing advanced skills in research, writing, service, and leadership, preparing them for graduate study and professional success.
  • Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, recognizes academic excellence and fosters literary and cultural engagement through service, events, and scholarly opportunities.

In and out of the classroom, the CNU English experience is built on connection, creativity, and community—giving you every opportunity to grow as a thinker, writer, and future leader.
