General Auditions

TheaterCNU maintains an open casting policy for mainstage and second stage productions. All students, faculty, staff and Tidewater community members are welcome to audition. All acting and music-theater concentration students are required to audition. All call backs will take place in the Ferguson Center Rehearsal Hall.

Each participant must prepare:

  • 32 bars, sung with piano accompaniment, from an opera, golden age musical, operetta or art song, preferably in English
  • An approximately 1-minute dramatic monologue from the realism period (late 19th-mid 20th-century drama); authors include H. Ibsen, A. Miller, A. Chekhov, L. Hellman, A. Wilson and L. Hansberry*

*Sophomores in the acting concentration must also submit an additional contrasting monologue to complete their sophomore checkpoint.

All roles open to all genders, races and ethnicities. Possible roles to be cast:

  • Dr. Thomas Stockmann, the town doctor and health expert of the springs, married to Catherine
  • Catherine Stockmann, married to the doctor
  • Petra Stockmann, their daughter and the school teacher
  • Peter Stockmann, the mayor and the doctor's sibling
  • Hovstad, a newspaper editor
  • Aslaksen, the newspaper publisher

The Trial of God
April 7, at 6 p.m.
Possible roles to be cast:

  • Berish, an innkeeper
  • Hanna, his daughter
  • Yankel, a middle-aged minstrel
  • Avrémel, a young minstrel
  • Mendel, an old minstrel
  • Maria, a scullery maid
  • Priest
  • Sam, a stranger

The Trial of God is a world premiere performance of a new opera. Performers cast in the opera may be requested to attend workshop rehearsals in spring 2021 or over the summer.

Callbacks will be scheduled to reduce occupancy load and promote de-densification of audition spaces and neighboring hallways. More information will be included with callback announcements.
