People of the Past – Teaching the Stories of History

CNU Center for American Studies' Fall Teacher Workshop Day

Saturday, October 19, 2019 
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Join us at Christopher Newport University’s Center for American Studies for a teacher workshop day focused on using artifacts, primary sources and history sites in your classroom.

The workshop is free. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Teachers will receive a certificate verifying six (6) hours of continuing education credit.

The day will include:


A keynote by India Meissel – History Department of Lakeland High School in Suffolk, Virginia and Immediate Past President of the National Council for the Social Studies

A hands-on exercise in creating historical character monologues with Abigail Schumann, playwright/performer; Exhibition Programs Manager at Jamestown Settlement; and author of the National History Day booklet and DVD ‘How to Create a Historical Performance.’

Investigate the stories of the people who built Fort Monroe with historian Robert Kelly.

Meet Angela, one of the first Africans to arrive in Virginia in 1619 as portrayed by historical interpreter and performer Valerie Gray Holmes.
