Hampton Roads in the Civil War

Wednesday, July 24 - Saturday July 27, 2019

How can the history and legacy of the Civil War help students understand the issues facing the Republic in the 21st Century?

Christopher Newport University’s Center for American Studies in partnership with the American Civil War Museum will sponsor a three-day workshop on the American Civil War. The workshop, led by Dr. Jonathan White, CNU Associate Professor of American Studies and Senior Fellow at the Center for American Studies, will examine Secession, the African America quest for freedom, and the pivotal role of Hampton Roads in the conflict. Teachers will visit the Civil War Museum in Richmond, “Freedom Fortress” (Fort Monroe), and the USS Monitor Center at the Mariner’s Museum.
