Dr. Jean Filetti, Professor of English and Director of the Office of Teacher Preparation, was awarded a grant from the Virginia Department of Education to continue CNU’s clinical faculty program in partnership with Newport News Public Schools.

The $24,000 grant provides special training for cooperating teachers in Newport News on how to better supervise teacher-interns, including candidates in CNU’s Master of Arts in Teaching Program, as they gradually assume all duties of a teacher in the last semester of their preparation program.

"It is our belief, as it is the belief of the Virginia Department of Education and the General Assembly, that teacher candidates and beginning teachers who are mentored appropriately and skillfully are more effective classroom teachers and are more likely to remain within their job placements," Filetti says.

Christopher Newport's Office of Teacher Preparation produces outstanding teachers through a five-year, bachelor's to master's degree or a traditional two-year master's program. The program in elementary education was recently ranked No. 5 in the nation by Top Master's in Education.
