The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) has named Christopher Newport one of only 101 colleges and universities in the United States to receive accreditation for their educator preparation programs. The CAEP standards are rigorous, nationally recognized standards developed to ensure excellence in teacher preparation.

Educator preparation providers seeking accreditation must pass peer review on five standards based on solid evidence that the provider's graduates are competent and caring educators, and that faculty and staff have the capacity to create a culture of evidence and use it to maintain and enhance the quality of the professional programs they offer.

"The awarding of CAEP accreditation is the culmination of over two years of work and affirms the quality education we are providing to future K-12 teachers," says Dr. Geoffrey Klein, Vice Provost for Research, Graduate Studies and Assessment. "This national recognition shows that we meet the highest standards of teacher preparation – ensuring graduates know their content areas, can employ innovative tools for teaching K-12 students and are ready to effectively teach after completing our student-teacher internship."

Prior to national accreditation, CNU's teacher preparation programs were accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.

"As a regional, public university in Virginia, it is paramount that we continue to produce excellent K-12 teachers to ensure Virginia continues to effectively educate the next generation," Klein adds. "National accreditation provides assurance of this important priority."
